Everything is Connected
When I am teaching a compassion education class, one of the first concepts I introduce is interconnectedness. The idea that our actions and thoughts can affect all of those around us is both complicated and simple. Yet, the more we are mindful about how our decisions impact others, the easier it becomes to make compassionate choices.
When I am teaching a conservation education class, one of the first concepts I introduce is ~you guessed it~ interconnectedness!
Compassion and conservation may outwardly seem like two separate ideas, but the foundations upon which they are built are exactly the same. Everything is Connected.
The Heart of the Matter
I started teaching conservation education over 20 years ago, beginning with a preschool dramatic play class called Crazy Critters. Over time I was able to add in an elementary afterschool Conservation Club, private homeschool sessions, and even a short stint as an education coordinator at a small zoological sanctuary. I was only ever able to reach a maximum of about 30 students at a time, but I sated myself with the idea that I had done my best to impact the choices those individual children would make in the future. With this in mind, my teacher heart is ecstatic to announce that Hannah and I will be partnering with the most successful cheetah breeding program in the Western Hemisphere: Wildlife Safari located in Winston, Oregon. This partnership will allow us to reach a much larger audience and hopefully help raise funds for their conservation programs.
